Facebook vs Orkut, and the winner is…
ComScore has reported that Facebook traffic has grown by 230% in India as compared to 36% traffic on Orkut from India for 6 month period - from January to June 2007. Facebook fever seems to be catching on in India. Facebook audience comprises of slightly older and more sophisticated crowd as compared to Orkut, which caters to more student oriented members. Currently Orkut has many more Indian members as compared to Facebook and in June 2007 it attacted 7.2 million unique visitors from India as compared to Facebook which attracted 785,000 unique visitors. Although Orkut (owned by Google) leads the pack in India, Facebook is growing by leaps and bounds and may catchup in the coming months. The comScore report also reveals that 40.7% of Facebook members in India are women, as compared to a mere 28% women on Orkut. BigAdda, Yaari, Bharatstudent and Minglebox - all Indian specific Social Networks, also have big plans to grow fast. Facebook’s global advertising is controlled by Microsoft, and already Indian companies like NDTV, Info Edge, SBI and Indiatimes are advertising on Facebook in India.
